Consonants with emphasis on stops and the [zero] concept
Korean has 8 simple consonants including silence [zero], which satisfied CVC as a syllable of earlier Korean by definition. Glides of [w, y], which appear in front of vowel sounds in very short duration blocking the air flow instantly, are included as semi-consonants. Korean consonant sounds are lighter and quicker than English sounds. Light stops [ ‘b, ‘d, ‘j and ‘g ] make initial unvoiced and unaccented sounds [ p, t, ch and k ] in very short duration followed by voiced ones [ b, d, j and g ]; strong stops make hard sounds of [bb, dd, l, ss, jj, ssh, and gg]; acute stops make aspirated sounds of [ p, t, ch and k]; and nasal explosion makes the sounds of [m, n and ng]. (All of the consonants are introduced in Figure 4).
